INTERAGENCY BOARD SPECIAL PROJECT TO FOCUS ON FEMALE BODY ARMOR

I just returned from the Interagency Board (IAB) October meeting which was held in Arlington, VA.  While there I was assigned to a special project team that will focus on female body armor.  The team was able to put together an initial action plan and outline of the project's focus, time-frame for completion, and path forward.  The IAB is now putting together a survey to be sent out to female officers.  Please watch for that survey, and please participate when you receive it.

The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is also working on some new research focusing on female body armor.  They will soon be forwarding to me an official request for photos of female officers in their body armor.  Once I receive that I will post that information here and send it out region-wide and through the IAWP list-serve.  Again, I encourage you to participate.

The more feed-back the IAB and NIJ receive the better the research will be.

PRODUCTIVE LATE BOARD MEETING HELD IN WINNIPEG BEFORE START OF A WEEK OF EXCELLENT TRAINING AT THE 52ND IAWP TRAINING CONFERENCE

The IAWP Board of Directors held two days of meetings before the IAWP training conference began.  The BOD held the meetings in the beautiful Manitoba Legislative Building.  Several new Region Coordinators, that were appointed by IAWP President Jane Townsley due to the creation of new Regions, were introduced at the meeting.  The BOD participated in strategic planning for the IAWP, passed all motions presented, voted on several policy changes, accepted all submitted reports, heard a report from 2015 Cardiff, Wales, and discussed many agenda items.  The reports and motions are all posted in the member's only section of the IAWP website and can be viewed by all members.  The BOD was informed that to date no conference bid has been put forth for 2016, and options were discussed.  Australian Council of Women and Policing (ACWAP) made a presentation to the BOD to host the 2017 conference in Cairns, Australia in conjunction with their semi-annual training conference.  The BOD had several questions but agreed to have the membership vote during the AGM.  The membership later voted to accept the bid on condition that the BOD further work with ACWAP to assure all concerns that arose during the BOD meeting are alleviated.

The Board of Directors listens to a proposal for a possible book published as a fundraising opportunity for the IAWP.  Submissions for the book would come from IAWP members.

Representatives from IAWP 2013 present the Board of Directors with the final conference report.

The Early Board Meeting will be held in Denver, CO February 25 to 28th and include two days of strategic planning.  Please contact me or Joann with any questions about the BOD meeting, the AGM, or anything posted in the member's only section of the IAWP website.

On Sunday, September 28, 2014 the conference got off to a soggy start, and the delegates gathered inside the Hotel Fort Garry lobby to keep dry before the start of the parade.  Marcie and Joann pose for a picture with Heike Kottmann from Germany inside the Hotel Fort Garry.  The delegates marched in the rain from the Hotel Fort Garry to the Manitoba Legislative Building.

Officers lined up inside the legislative building in preparation for the Peace Officer's Memorial Service that preceded the IAWP Opening Ceremonies.  During the Opening Ceremonies Maureen Ing and Carol Ann Halliday were presented Heritage Awards.

Marcie and Joann meet up with Odette Lewis from Trinidad and Tobago before the start of the Opening Ceremonies.

Lots of fun was had with Tom Jones during the Cardiff IAWP 2015 Hospitality Night at the Tavern United on Wednesday, October 1, 2014.

Deb and Carla enjoy the Cardiff hospitality night.

Cardiff IAWP 2015 put on a fantastic hospitality for conference delegates.  The fish and chips were excellent.  Best of all were the homemade Welsh cakes!  I must have ate a dozen of the delicious cakes.  The hospitality night was very well organized.  Can't wait until the actual conference next year!

Before you start to think the conference was just ceremony and fun, I thought I should show you a photo of some of the training offered.  The 2014 Conference Committee put together some fantastic training.  My focus was the Human Rights and Gender Based Crime classes.  I attended some very informative classes, and came home with ideas on how to utilize what I learned in my current assignment.  Joann chose to attend Leadership classes and several classes regarding Wellness and Work/Life Balance.

The week came to a close during the Final Gala on Thursday, October 2, 2014.  It was held at the RBC Convention Centre and celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the first female troop in the RCMP.  Several of the original troop members were in attendance.  Delegates enjoyed a cocktail hour, a delicious meal, and a fun night of dancing.  We were all pleasantly surprised by the diverse musical selection provided by Jet Stream, Royal Canadian Air Force Band.

Volunteers dressed in historic uniforms to greet the delegates upon arrival for the Final Gala.

Each table held a different centerpiece.  The Convention Centre was turned into an elegant ballroom.

Darlene, Diane, Deb, and Mylan enjoying one last fun filled evening together.

The dance floor was filled to capacity for the "electric glide."

As always, the ladies of Trinidad and Tobago are photo sensations in their stunning dress uniforms.

The 2014 conference was a fantastic week of informative training and speakers.  The week also held many opportunities for valuable networking, and meeting up with friends only seen once a year.  Thank you to the Winnipeg Police Service, the Brandon Police Service, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for all their hard work in making the conference successful!
